Course Descriptions

PE/Health--Mr.  Lapham, Miss Norma (Health)

Mustang Record Breakers - Do you want your name on the CES record board? Push ups, curl ups, plank hold, shuttle run, 100 meter dash, mile run, and many more. Step up and try to break records previously set by CES students. Are you going to hold the next record?


Outdoor Adventures

Students will explore the outdoors and help complete work on our nature trail.  This work is connected to the Vermont Rural Education Collaborative grant.  It was written by 5 of our middle school students.


Recreation 101 - 3 classes of soccer, 3 classes of disc golf, 3 classes of capture the flag and 3 classes of random PE games in the gym (rain days only). We will follow this exact schedule unless the weather does not permit. 


Team Sports - Floor Hockey, Basketball, Soccer, Capture the flag, and Ultimate Frisbee are all examples of activities that will be played in Team Sports class. We will play a different game every class. 



Health / SEL - All MS students will have a trimester of Health / SEL Class. We will focus on nutrition, physical activity, alcohol tobacco and other drugs, as well as social emotional well being. 



Library--Mrs.  Bolton

Manufacturing and Design (8th grade)

Students will use cuttle.xyz to design items such as ornaments and earrings and then use the GlowForge laser cutter to bring their designs to life.  Students will package, promote and sell these products to benefit their class.


Green Mountain Mustangs

Students will design and carry out projects that serve our school, community and greater world.  


Open Makerspace

Students will design their own projects based on their interest and tools that are available in our library makerspace.


VREC/Outdoor Adventures

Students will help assess the current condition of the nature trail, identify signage that is needed and then participate in work groups to complete these tasks.  


Book Club/Storywalk

Students will explore books, activities related to the books, and maintain the storywalk on the nature trail.  



Music--Mr. Viera

Band

This course offers students the opportunity to explore and develop their musical talents through the study and performance of various instruments in a band setting. Students will learn to read music, practice instrumental techniques, and collaborate with peers to perform a diverse repertoire of music. Emphasis will be placed on teamwork, creativity, and musical expression, providing a fun and engaging environment for students to enhance their musical abilities and confidence. No prior experience is required, and all levels of musicians are welcome.


Chorus

Discover the joy of singing in our Chorus! This course invites students to explore vocal music through group singing, learning techniques to improve their vocal range, tone, and harmony. You'll receive instruction on vocal performance, sight-reading, and musical expression. Students will perform in various concerts and events, building confidence and teamwork while sharing the powerful experience of making music together. Perfect for those who love to sing and want to be part of a vibrant musical community! 


Music Technology

Unlock the future of sound in our Music Technology Elective Course! This course introduces students to the cutting-edge tools and techniques used in modern music production. Learn how to compose, record, edit, and produce music using industry-standard software and equipment. Students will explore topics such as digital audio workstations (DAWs), sound design, mixing, and mastering. Ideal for those interested in blending creativity with technology, this course empowers students to bring their musical ideas to life in innovative ways. Perfect for aspiring music producers, sound engineers, and tech-savvy musicians!


Ukulele

Strum your way to musical fun in our Ukulele Elective Course! Designed for beginners and experienced players alike, this course teaches the basics of ukulele playing, including chords, strumming patterns, and simple melodies. You'll learn to play a variety of songs across different genres, all while developing your musical ear and rhythm. The ukulele's small size and sweet sound make it an ideal instrument for quick learning and easy enjoyment. Perfect for students looking to start their musical journey or add a new instrument to their repertoire in a relaxed and supportive environment!


Spanish 

Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Spanish language in this unique elective course! Explore the rich cultural heritage of Spanish-speaking countries through their music, learning to understand and perform songs in Spanish. This course combines language learning with musical practice, teaching students Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar in the context of popular and traditional music. Ideal for music lovers eager to expand their linguistic skills, this course offers a fun and engaging way to experience the rhythm and soul of the Spanish-speaking world. Perfect for those who want to connect language and music in a dynamic learning environment!



Farm to School-–Mr. Leskey

How it’s made -

Do you ever wonder how our food gets to our plate? Or how your clothes get to your dresser? How do they get to the store you buy it from? In this elective students will learn how to find the answers to these questions and research how to produce these items for their own. 


SEL –  Miss Norma

Wellness Wednesday

We will explore the idea of wellness together and use these discussions as a jumping off point for projects and activities.


Mindful Thursday

We will work together to explore what mindfulness is and try different activities such as exploring nature, movement activities and art.


Introduction to Food Service– Chef Toni, Ms. Jackie

Students will learn basic food service skills such as food safety and  preparation, knife skills and how to use a variety of kitchen equipment.  Students must arrive prepared to follow food service expectations by having their hair covered, long pants and closed toe shoes.
