Dear Charleston Families,

I hope that you all had a great summer with lots of family, friends, laughs, and rest.  This summer seemed to fly by; it is hard to believe that it is already August!  It was wonderful to see so many students participate in Encore, PreK Camp, Humanities Camp, and Extended School Year Services!  I am looking forward to having folks back in our school.

This year, we are welcoming some new professionals into our community.  While it is always sad to see people move on from CES, it is nice to see them grow and develop as professionals.  Here is the list of new folks and their roles.  I know you all will help welcome them to our school community.

  • Ethan Gariepy–Returning as the CES Behavior Specialist

  • Eileen Baker–Returning as the CES Music Teacher

  • Rhonda Bullis–Kitchen Manager

  • Ryan Hilliker–Middle School Math Teacher

  • Frank “Trey” Shiver–Literacy Interventionist

  • Maura Gahan–Art Teacher

  • Tristan Colburn–Paraeducator

  • Kristen Benway–Paraeducator

  • Christine Grzebien–Special Educator

The first student day is on Wednesday, August 26.  We will hold our annual Open House on Thursday evening from 5PM to 6:30PM.  The annual Title One Meeting will be at 4:30 on Thursday evening in the Library.  If you have not attended a Title One Meeting in the past, it is packed with information about how our school systems work--programming, assessments, communication tools, and all around information session about our school.  Please attend if you are able.

As was the case last year, please know that CES will be cell phone free to protect instructional time for kids.  Therefore, if kids bring devices with them to school, they will need to be turned off and kept in backpacks.  Classrooms have lockboxes for devices for this purpose.

Additionally, please know that the school day starts at 7:45AM and will dismiss at 3PM each day.  If you are dropping kids off, please be sure to drop them off by 7:45AM.  If you are picking kids up, we will begin dismissal at 2:55PM and will reunite students with guardians in the parking lot loop.  Cars should not be entering the bus loop at arrival or dismissal times.

Lastly, I hope you all have a wonderful last few weeks of summer break!  If you need anything or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, or Mrs. Moulton directly at (802)895-2915.  The NCSU Annual Student Update will go live in the upcoming weeks, so please be sure to complete that prior to the first day. This will ensure we have the most recent contact and health information for your child.  I look forward to seeing you all soon!

     Respectfully,

Chris Lawson, Principal
